Current testing with a variety of geophysical (remote sensing) methods and other research is revealing interesting new information about how this fascinating and unique Late Archaic mound complex and its large plaza were used through time. The largest mound is over 70 feet tall, second only to Cahokia’s Monks Mound, and six concentric rings of earthen ridges enclose a large plaza area. Large and small circular “woodhenge-like” post features and many other interesting features have been revealed in the plaza. This whole complex is unique in form and unexpected for the hunting and gathering society that built it around 1500 BC.
