This movie tells the story of three sisters who are part of a disappearing, centuries-old tradition of “sea women” (haenyeo/해녀) in South Korea’s islands. The movie explores the delicate balance and deep connections between humanity and the natural world.
For much of the history of Jeju Island and Biyangdo, free-diving to catch mollusks, urchins, and seaweed was an exclusively female profession. These “sea women'' were the main breadwinners and heads of households of their family in what has been considered a semi-matriarchal family structure. In modern day, these family dynamics have changed and the tradition of “sea women'' divers is disappearing. However, these stories are important to tell, and an older generation of women on these islands are still diving without oxygen tanks and showcasing incredible skill.
